Tight Stability Oscillators


Tight stability can be one of the most important characteristics of a crystal oscillator.

What is a Tight Stability Oscillator?

Short term frequency stability is a measure of the frequency change over time (typically from <1 second to >10 seconds). Frequency change over longer periods (from one day to many years) is referred to as aging. The amount of frequency change over a given temperature range is a primary attribute of a crystal oscillator, and is usually measured on 100% of units manufactured. Basic crystal oscillators can hold a stability of ±20ppm over a wide temperature range (e.g., -40 to +85°C) or as low as ±3ppm over narrower ranges (e.g., 0 to +50°C).

High stability oscillators, including TCXOs (Temperature Compensated Xtal Oscillator) and OCXOs (Oven Controlled Xtal Oscillator) will improve frequency stability performance substantially.

TCXOs are frequency compensated over the operating temperature that the application may experience during its operating life. OCXOs are designed to provide a stable, oven-controlled environment for the quartz crystal oscillator; oven temperatures are set high enough above the application's operating temperature range so that the frequency remains stable and unaffected by external temperature changes during operation. Oscillator type and selection will be driven by a number of factors including application/system performance parameters, operating temperature range, the operating environment and package size.
